Retail sales numbers for December were announced and it seems like US growth enthusiasm has come back, says MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, but he wonders if it will last.
Global financial markets were believers in growth again yesterday.
Tuesday, what the headlines are calling olid(but I'd call tepid) retail sales growth in December, reassured investors and traders that the US economy wasn't about to slow down. (That was last week's fear, after all.)
And yesterday, we had new forecasts from the World Bank (echoing comments from the International Monetary Fund) for higher growth in the global economy in 2014.
On the return of optimism about economic growth, the US Standard & Poor's 500 Index (SPX) was up 0.53% as of 3:00 PM New York time. The German DAX (IX:DAX) finished the day up 2.03%. And the Japanese Nikkei 225 Index (NKY) closed up 2.5%.
Retail sales (excluding volatile auto sales) climbed 0.7% in December. That was the largest increase in ten months. Including autos retail sales climbed 0.2%. Economists had expected an increase of just 0.1% in December. Revisions took November's growth down to 0.4% from the previous 0.7%.

All of this together resulted in stock market declines of 7-12% in a month, depending on which index you measure. The size of this orrectionwas not unexpected, but the short time frame was unusual. On some days the forced selling appeared to feed on itself and bordered on panic liquidation. As I write this letter on 10/17, this selling has abated, at least for the time being. The good news is that we raised some cash coming into this period, and
Top 10 Retail Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Arch Therapeutics Inc (ARTH)
Arch Therapeutics, Inc. (Arch), formerly Almah, Inc., incorporated on September 16, 2009, operates as a life science company developing polymers containing peptides intended to form gel-like barriers over wounds to stop or control bleeding. Arch is a medical device company offering an approach to the rapid cessation of bleeding (hemostasis) and control of fluid leakage (sealant) during surgery and trauma care. Arch products are in preclinical development. The first product, AC5, is designed for hemostasis in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and open surgical procedures.
AC5
AC5 is a synthetic peptide consisting of naturally occurring amino acids. When squirted or sprayed onto a wound, AC5 intercalates into the nooks and crannies of the connective tissue where it builds itself into a physical, mechanical structure. That structure provides a barrier to leaking substances, including blood and other bodily fluids, regardless of type of surgery or, based on early data, clotting ability.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By James E. Brumley]
With each passing day, the opportunity Arch Therapeutics Inc. (OTCBB:ARTH) is presenting to investors gets a little bit clearer... as clear as AC5. What's AC5? It's a hemostasis agent. In other words, it stops post-surgical bleeding. It doesn't do the job quite like anything else out there, though, and that's a good thing for current and/or future ARTH shareholders.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Brian Pacampara]
Sales growth this last quarter was up only about 6%, but net income per share was up 21%. They pay a $0.60 dividend which gives them a dividend yield of 1.4%. Their cash flow yield is 4.6%, so they could easily raise their dividend. They are by far the leader in a very fragmented industry. I believe both [Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI ) ] and GNC will do well and I think they may make a fair pairing in a portfolio. Stability versus growth.
They do have $1.1 billion in debt. But they generate about $200 million in cash flow a year and they have $174 million in cash, so that shouldn't be a problem. Their cash flow is very high, so in my opinion, is reason enough to believe they will beat the S&P 500 over the next ten years. - [By Jeremy Bowman]
What: Shares of the Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI ) were looking under the weather today, falling as much as 10% after a disappointing earnings report.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Andrew Marder]
I don't buy poorly made clothes anymore. There was a time when I thought that saving a buck was worth it, but now I've moved into the "quality comes first" phase of my life. Even so, I know my limits when it comes to price, so I was taken aback when I noticed that Aeropostale's (NYSE: ARO ) stock is currently trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 93. That means that for every dollar Aeropostale earned in income over the last four quarters, investors are being asked to pay $93.
