5 Things That Can Propel Apple Back Above $700

Even after a recent rebound off their lows, Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) shares still trade for about 25% below their all-time high of $705. Could they once again soar to such lofty levels? It's certainly possible, and here are five events that could help that happen in the months ahead.

An iPad Christmas
With the new iPad Air receiving very favorable reviews, a recently released version of the iPad Mini now including an impressive Retina display, and the entry-level iPad Mini now priced at an even more affordable $299, the signs suggest that Apple will enjoy tremendous iPad sales over the upcoming holiday shopping season. In responding to an analyst's question regarding iPad growth rates, Tim Cook stated on Apple's conference call, "I think it's going to be an iPad Christmas." I think he's right, and that should bode well for Apple's stock price.

A deal with China Mobile
Apple plans to double the number of retail stores in China over the next two years in an attempt to boost its distribution and to create more brand awareness. But there's another action Apple can take that would probably have an even more significant impact on Apple's sales in this vital market: reaching a deal with China Mobile (NYSE: CHL  ) to bring the iPhone to its massive network of more than 700 million mobile subscribers. You read that number correctly -- that's more than twice the U.S. population. And while a great many of China Mobile's customers would be unable to afford an iPhone, those who can afford the device can move the needle significantly in terms of Apple's sales in the region and on an overall revenue basis.

Apple's enterprise assault
After gaining a beachhead in the enterprise, or corporate, market segment thanks to the popularity of the iPhone and iPad, Apple is now taking steps to grab even an even bigger share of this massive market. Long dominated by Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) and its Windows operating software, the corporate PC market is now in a state of transition, seemingly away from Microsoft-powered PCs and related devices and toward Apple's ecosystem of products. Forrester Research recently reported that 18% of employees said they use an Apple device for work, up from the 3% range just a few years ago. While strong consumer adoption was responsible for most of Apple's initial success in the enterprise space, the tech giant now appears to be beefing up its ranks with more business sales and support personnel to better attract and serve corporate customers. And Apple recently made its Mavericks operating system and iWork suite of productivity software apps available for free for existing users and new owners of its devices, which many have viewed as a direct assault on Microsoft's Windows and Office-based empire. Apple's aggressive moves into the enterprise sector are a major threat to Microsoft and its partners, and a major profit opportunity for Apple and its shareholders.

A dividend boost
Much has been made about Apple's massive share buyback program, and for good reason. Apple has spent billions buying back huge chunks of its shares, which has already reduced Apple's shares outstanding by about 47 million shares, representing 5% of the total shares outstanding before the launch of the repurchase program. Continued share repurchases will boost Apple's earnings per share and probably its share price, as many investors tend to focus on metrics such price-to-earnings multiples. But Apple's massive cash hoard still checks in at more than $140 billion, and with free cash flow of more than $45 billion over the past 12 months,  Apple can easily afford to boost its dividend by 20% or more. Such a move would probably entice income-seeking investors and create excitement around Apple's stock once again.

The Apple TV we've been waiting for
The core of many Apple bears' arguments is that Apple's innovation magic died when Steve Jobs passed away. Probably the best way to prove to critics and investors alike that Apple is still capable of creating game-changing new products is ... to create a game-changing new product. And the most game-changing of them all would be the long-rumored and almost mythical Apple TV. I'm not referring to the Apple TV currently on the market. I'm speaking of the one we've been waiting for that's supposed to completely disrupt the cable television industry. Rumors have been swirling that Apple is attempting to reach deals with content providers that will allow it to offer a premium TV experience that would free viewers from ads and commercials. While the details are still unknown, such a creation would probably meet with strong demand and drive excitement for Apple's ecosystem of products and services, thereby strengthening the Apple halo effect and restoring the shine on Apple's brand.

Top Undervalued Companies To Watch In Right Now

The Foolish bottom line
Out of the five items I've listed that could drive Apple's share price back above $700, the new Apple TV may be the one for which we wait the longest. But it can't come soon enough. That's because an all-out $2.2 trillion media war over the future of television is being waged that pits cable companies such as Cox, Comcast, and Time Warner against technology giants such as Apple, Google, and Netflix. Hot Logistics Companies To Buy Right Now

The Department of Defense awarded Honeywell (NYSE: HON  ) a sizable supply contract Tuesday.

The Defense Logistics Agency, Aviation, extended the term of Honeywell's three-year base contract for the supply of consumable and depot-level reparable spare parts for multiple weapons systems by an additional 18 months. The contract also has three, three-year option periods. One effect of this extension is to add $165.1 million to theindefinite-delivery requirements contract. Another is to extend the completion date for Honeywell's performance to Nov. 6, 2014.

Weapons systems such as the ones covered in this contract generally accrue to Honeywell's Aerospace division, which at $12 billion in annual business, accounts for roughly $0.32 out of every $1 Honeywell brings in as revenue. As such, Tuesday's contract win could make up close to 1.4% of the Aerospace division's revenues over the next year -- and about 0.4% of Honeywell's overall sales for the year.

Today, the first trading day after the contract was announced, Honeywell shares are up 0.5% as of this writing, trading around $77.30.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

On Tuesday, EnerSys (NYSE: ENS  ) will release its latest quarterly results. The key to making smart investment decisions on stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you'll be less likely to make an uninformed knee-jerk reaction to news that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.

There's no foolproof way to know the future for EnerSys (NYSE: ENS  ) or any other company. However, certain clues may help you see potential stumbles before they happen -- and before your stock craters as a result.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at EnerSys (NYSE: ENS  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is EnerSys doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, OK, it seems. Trailing-12-month revenue decreased 0.3%, and inventory decreased 2.2%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue dropped 3.5%, and inventory shrank 2.2%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks healthy. Revenue grew 2.7%, and inventory dropped 6.9%.

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Early on Wednesday, industrial battery manufacturer EnerSys (ENS) entered into an agreement to acquire Purcell Systems for $115 million.

EnerSys expects the transaction to be accretive to its earnings by 15 to 20 cents per share in the first year. The company will finance the purchase of the Spokane, Washington-based company with existing cash and credit facilities.

These gains, along with strength in auto parts, with which IEP is involved via its stake in Federal-Mogul (Nasdaq: FDML) offset a decline in energy as the refining downturn squeezed CVR Refining’s (Nasdaq: CVRR) margins.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James Brumley]

Still, for the nimble who know when to get out, OREX is one of the few cheap stocks worth a closer look.

    Sucampo Pharmaceuticals (SCMP)

Finally, though the price of $7.60 clearly qualifies it as one pf the cheapest of the cheap stocks out there in the pharmaceutical world, that’s not the reason Sucampo Pharmaceuticals (SCMP) may be worth a look here. It’s the 30% slide we’ve seen SCMP stock suffer since peaking in mid-January. It’s not a pullback that’s bound to go unchallenged by the bulls.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 stock that's starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Sucampo Pharmaceuticals (SCMP), which is engaged in the discovery, development and commercialization of proprietary drugs based on prostones, and other novel drug technologies. This stock is off to a decent start in 2013, with shares up by 26%.

If you take a look at the chart for Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last four months, with shares dumping hard from its high of $10.48 to its recent low of $5.40 a share. During that downtrend, shares of SCMP have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, the downside volatility for SCMP looks to be over in the short-term since the stock has started to reverse its downtrend and enter an uptrend. That reverse is quickly pushing shares of SCMP within range of triggering a major breakout trade above a key downtrend line.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SCMP if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $6.33 to $6.66 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 115,383 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SCMP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $7.09 to $7.67 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give SCMP a chance to tag $8 to $9 a share.

Traders can look to buy SCMP off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $5.58 to $5.40 a share. One can also buy SCMP off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

    Chemical reaction
The disappointments are starting to mount for investors in OMNOVA Solutions (NYSE: OMN  ) , an emulsion polymer and specialty chemicals maker that has missed the Street's estimates in worsening fashion for three straight quarters. Its first-quarter results, released earlier this month, showed a 9% decline in total revenue from the year-ago period because of lower volumes in Europe and India, and business seasonality. However, optimistic contentions could also be made based on this same earnings report.

We see several potential sources of continued activity as: (i) Schlumberger (SLB) may look to recapture #1 spot in revenues if Halliburton/Baker Hughes do merge; (ii) Halliburton/Baker Hughes may look to plug their seismic service gap (seismic has been the worst-performing industry sub-segment this year); (iii) Halliburton/Baker Hughes may be forced to divest US assets in order to pass antitrust review. Hot Recreation Stocks To Buy Right Now

The last few days have been nothing less than incredible for stocks like Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Medbox Inc. (OTCMKTS:MDBX), Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), and Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA). MJNA shares have jumped 90% since last Friday. PHOT is up 51% for the same timeframe. CBIS has grown 150%, while MDBX is up 112%. The reason? It's largely the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado - a law that went into effect as of January 1st. The legalization of medical marijuana in Illinois on the same day didn't hurt either. And truth be told, the event-based rally from the likes of Medbox and Cannabis Science makes basic sense - it's a landmark shift in the way this country views and treats marijuana. On the flipside, before wading any deeper into stocks like Medical Marijuana or Growlife, current and would-be owners might want to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

Most Christmas tree farms are privately owned, but they need to get good seedlings from somewhere, so many turn to timber company Weyerhaeuser, which grows the most popular species—including balsam fir, Douglas fir, Scotch pine and white pine.

Weyerhaeuser controls about 6 million acres of timberland, with about a third of that in the Pacific Northwest, which is America’s most prolific lumber-producing region thanks to its cool, damp climate and considerable rainfall.

“The fact that it’s the largest timber producer in the Pacific Northwest makes Weyerhaeuser extremely attractive, because the company’s location gives it easy export access to China,” wrote Investing Daily analyst Benjamin Shepherd in a December 13 article. “This location also leaves it well-placed to pick up the supply slack created by lower production caps in Canada, which is typically a key Chinese supplier.”

Famous Products Invented for the Military

While most people think private enterprise is responsible for innovation, a great deal of the technology Americans rely on comes from another well-known source: the U.S. military.

Over the years, the military, and the private enterprises developing products for the military, have created some of the most important products we use today. Some of the inventions have been less groundbreaking than others, such as Silly Putty and Aviator sunglasses. But some military research also directly led to significant innovations such as the microwave oven and the GPS.

Click here to see the eight famous products

The military contracted out most of these inventions to private companies. One exception is the modern GPS network. It was designed in the 1970s by researchers in both the Navy and Air Force and was built in the late ’70s and ’80s. The technology, initially designed as a guidance and tracking system for planes, boats and missiles, is today used in everything from commercial aircraft to personal navigation systems.

Private companies developed most of the products on this list, often answering the military’s call during wartime. During World War II, a Johnson & Johnson division created what would eventually become duct tape, originally to seal containers and quickly repair equipment in the field. The Jeep was an all-terrain scout vehicle built by a company called Willy's-Overland. The Jeep was widely used by the military in World War II and the Korean War and eventually also became a very popular domestic auto brand.

In many cases, the final use of the product completely differs from its intended military function. What eventually became feminine hygiene products under the Kotex brand was originally medical gauze developed for the military during World War I. Silly Putty was invented as a possible substitute for rubber. While it failed in this regard, it became a popular toy.

The military also played a part in developing even greater technologies. ARPANET, considered by many to be a precursor to the modern Internet, was a military program designed to share documents securely between facilities. In the 1940s and ’50s, the military even played a role in the development of the modern computer.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed products that were either developed for military use by the military or contractors, or those which were created as the result of military research. We excluded products where the military or contractors only played a part in the development of the product, as was the case with the computer.

These are the famous products invented for the military.

Top Railroad Companies To Buy For 2014

As big-bank watchers well know, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , has been being beaten up again recently over problems tied to mortgages -- specifically, the bank's alleged behavior toward troubled mortgage borrowers.

While this kind of press tends to perpetuate the notion that B of A will never get over its acquisition of Countrywide and its boatloads of bad loans, this is not truly the case. Even as high-profile cases like the bank's supposed railroading of homeowners trying to find a way out of their personal mortgage muddle hog headlines, the bank is chugging along, reducing its stable of toxic loans.

There's no doubt that Bank of America is making headway in that regard. A recent Bloomberg articlenoted that, of the 1.6 million problem loans the bank once had on its books, only 667,000 remain. This has led to reductions in the bank's Legacy Asset Servicing unit, which corralled the crummy Countrywide loans into a separate department and hired staff to deal with these mortgages -- and the borrowers entangled with them. Some estimate the size of this workforce to have been about 59,000 employees.

The latest buy for my Special Situations portfolio is Ryman Hospitality (NYSE: RHP  ) . The company operates four of the top 10 largest convention hotels in the U.S., and it converted to a REIT late last year, making it more likely to trade for a higher multiple. In March, I bought $2,000 of the stock, and it has since done little but go down. But Ryman is a solid company with premier properties that deserves to trade at a premium to peers, rather than a steep discount. So I'm adding another $1,000 to my position.

Small cap stocks KBridge Energy Corp (OTCMKTS: BMMCF), Medifocus Inc (OTCMKTS: MDFZF) and Inscor Inc (OTCMKTS: IOGA) have been getting some attention lately in various investment newsletters and some of it is deserved as the first stock sank 35% on Friday, the second one recently released its financials (which did show a big improvement, but there is also a big catch for investors) and the third one has been the subject of a very aggressive promotional campaign. But are any of these three small caps really all that hot for investors? Here is a quick reality check:

Chegg, Inc. (NYSE: CHGG) was the IPO disappointment of the week. Sure it has a lot of competition, but IPOs are supposed to be on fire now. Chegg managed to gain almost 3% on Friday to close at $9.13, but one must remember that the IPO price at $12.50 never saw the $12.50 open. The stock opened at $9.80 and closed at $8.88 on the first day, a move which will baffle IPO investors of growth companies who are buying an IPO at a time when major indexes are hitting new all-time highs. By the way, GSV Capital Corp. (NASDAQ: GSVC) was a runner-uploser along with Chegg, as this fund owned shares of Twitter and Chegg pre-IPO. The stock price was above $16 before the Twitter IPO and is now down to $12.03 after another 8.8% drop on Friday. Bye-bye.
